14.5.2012 I had the pleasure of attending a photo-walk with Arved Gintenreiter in Venezia. As his one day walk has no time limit I opted for the full package: 16 (!) hours of walking and shooting in the most photogenic city in the world! From VERY early in the morning till late in the evening.
So we started out at about 4.30 in the pursuit of capturing the beautiful early morning light in the area around St.Mark’s Square. Continuing with breakfast and coffee and inspiring and informative photo-conversation. After discussing our itinerary, we started our long day
of photowalk in Castello, the picturesque working class sestiere of Venezia.
Arved is a very inspirational ‘photowalker’. From the moment I first emailed him about my desire to go on a walk in Venezia, he quickly and thoroughly replied to all my questions, doing his very best to set up a perfect walk suited my needs and wishes. Not a single moment of our 16 hours walk I felt he lost focus on his goal of making it a perfect day for me.
So the result is I had a fantastic day, and almost completely forgot my tired legs from all the walking – it was so much fun. And I learned so much from Arved – where to find the best spots for shooting in Venezia, when in the day to go there for best possible light, and a lot about how to operate my camera for best results when capturing the scenes.
In addition, Arved did special arrangements for me to visit some unique places, not usually accessible. It gave me some very interesting shooting possibilities.
Arved is a gifted photographer and a very good instructor. He is also a very friendly and generous guy that is a joy to photowalk with. Whether you opt for just a few hours or a full day, I consider his walks a bargain. Even if you choose a short, 3 hours walk, I`m convinced you will get great value for your money. I would be surprised if you could find a better photowalk offer anywhere in the world!
Oeyvind Toft,
very happy customer
Thank you for this magnificent review, Oeyvind! Glad to see, you had such fun with the tour – as I did have taking you around, too. Nice to got known to you making a new friend!
Looking forward to your next Venice trip,
Arved
What a great photo walk and town! Arved showed us Venice in a way as you never could discover it on your own. Of course we saw all the famous highlights as Piazza San Marco, Canal Grande and the Doge’s Palace. But especially he showed us so many places in Venice which hardly any tourist will find. And it seems that Arved never gets tired. So we started very early in the morning when the light for taking photos is perfect, and we didn’t stop before late at night, when Venice looks lovely with all the illumination.
Arved helped us a lot to find exiting perspectives on buildings and people. He always has an idea, how to make a picture more vivid and more expressive. Along the way, he showed us which options we have with our camera. For the first time we took some pictures without the automatic operation. In the end, we learned a lot and we had the best photos we ever shot in one of our holidays.
The photo walk was a great mixture. Arved really knows a lot of the Venetian history and culture, he is a great photographer and a patient instructor. Thanks a lot for this wonderful day in Venice.
Thank you! We’ll keep in touch, Arved
I booked a (very) early morning walking tour with Arved Gintenreiter, and I’m so glad I did. Arved is knowledgeable, conscientious, kind and FUN! From the time I first contacted him, he quickly responded to all my email inquiries and made me feel very comfortable.
Our walk began in St. Mark’s square where we watched the morning light change. The square was deserted and quite lovely. Arved helped me set up my camera to capture the beauty of this area – well worth the early wake up call.
Arved arranged the tour according to what I wanted to see so we spent the greatest part of our walk in the Castello area, away from tourists. Arved knows Venice and sees it through the eyes of a photographer. No guide book can give you that.
When I booked my tour, my expectations were that I would be taken to some interesting areas in Venice and come home with nice photos. I got so much more than that. During our time together he helped me use my camera more effectively and he guided me to think before shooting. I not only came home with wonderful photos, but I also have a better appreciation for the story I’m trying to tell through my photography. Thank you Arved.
I highly recommend Arved’s Venice Photo Walk.
Thank you for these nice words, Josi! I am glad to read that you more than enjoyed the walk. Looking forward to see your photo results. Arved
I booked an early morning photo walk with Arved, and it was well worth the 3:45am wakeup call!!
We started our walk in St. Mark’s square, and captured it in all it’s glory… not a person around, and the best lighting for photography. We then grabbed a quick coffee and croissant, and ventured to the Castello area to watch/photograph Venice waking up.
Arved is a very knowledgeable, patient, and great teacher. And it shows that he enjoys teaching others, as the walk was very fun, and he was very informative the entire walk, not only with photography, but history of Venice as well.
From the moment I first emailed him about a photowalk, he quickly and thoroughly replied to all my questions. I wanted to see the sunrise, and areas of Venice that a tourist would not normally get to see, and he did a great job in setting this up.
Not only do I have some great photos from this walk, but some great knowledge of my camera and photography as well. He teaches you in a way that makes you think about the image before you shoot, about what you want out of the picture and what you are trying to accomplish.
I highly recommend this walk; it is well worth the money… and the early morning walk is a must!!
Thanks Arved!!
Glad to see you got such fantastic images out of the walk! Strongly hope to make it to Canada to meet both of you again one day. Thanks for your review, Arved
I can wholeheartedly recommend Arved and his FANTASTIC photo tour. He knows his photography inside and out and is an excellent teacher. His knowledge of Venice, it’s history and culture, is amazing and really makes the city come alive. He takes you off the beaten path to the quiet areas where you learn about the ‘real’ Venice. The price was right for all that he offers, and my photography has improved immensely.
I booked an all day tour and was not disappointed. He met me at my hotel and took me all over Venice and Burano. We stayed out shooting until 10pm and I got some great shots of both the usual tourist spots (Rialto, Bridge of Sighs, St. Marks) but also of many of the smaller, out-of-the-way areas that only the locals go to. Wonderful lighting and no hordes of tourists either. His very thorough knowledge of Venice, combined with his photography skills and patience with instructing me was worth every euro!
Arved’s tour of Venice is not to be missed, if you are looking for an excellent guide to Venice combined with improving your photography skills.
I am an amateur photographer. I’ve been to Venice many times. My wife and I always take a walking tour to learn more about the city, but on our latest trip, I also spent 8 hours with Arved and ‘saw’ the city in a completely new way.
I have taken other photography workshops and experienced a range of teaching styles. Arved is on par with the best.
Firstly, he is very knowledgeable about Venice and has scouted the best places (and times) for taking photos. He also speaks Italian, which was very helpful because he gets the locals to be part of the photos when appropriate.
Secondly, Arved is very friendly and eager to help people learn more about their camera.
Thirdly, and for me most importantly, photography is not about the technical details for him – his main priority is composition and specifically ‘telling a story’ with each picture: making a photo, not taking a photo. For me this was the most enjoyable part of the walk: slowing down and taking in what we were looking at and finding the story and then composing the photo.
I really had a great time and got some great photos.
I wanted to photograph Venice but with only one day and never having been there before, I wanted a guide to ensure that I would at the places I hoped to shoot at the best times of day and in the best light. I wanted to be able to shoot the iconic places such as Piazza San Marco and the views on the Grande Canal from the Ponte dell’Accademia, and also photograph some of Venice that the typical tourist may not see. I booked with Arved a few weeks in advance for a whole day – sunrise to sunset. I drove to Piazzale Roma from out of town and Arved met me at 4:45AM outside the parking garage. We took the vaporetto to Piazza San Marco and started our day of photography before dawn. We shot in the early light as the sun came up, before any tourists were in the piazza, and then moved into the neighborhoods and back streets where only an experienced local would know where to find interesting shots. Not only is Arved an interesting and knowledgeable guide, he’s also an excellent and accomplished photographer with a keen eye for color, composition, and interesting scenes. After coffee and rolls, we moved quickly from spot to spot, Arved’s knowledge and enthusiasm for photography providing opportunity after opportunity for great shots. After a quick lunch we got on another water taxi and visited the island of Burano, with its fabulous colors and reflections in the canals. After returning to the main island of Venice, we hit the main hot spots on my list and also visited some of Arved’s favorite places. We ended the day back at the Grande Canal at Piazza San Marco and photographed there as the lights came on and the sun went down. I had hoped to get perhaps 20 really good shots. I got many more than that and at the same time had a very good time with Arved, who is in his own right a very interesting and pleasant companion to spend a day with in Venice. Whether you are a serious or casual photographer, I highly recommend Arved Gintenreiter Photography. You will not be disappointed!
I did alot of research to find a guide who was flexable and Arved was the Guy! He took me to the places I wanted to see and help me shoot the pictures to remember what I saw.He was so nice and informative about the sights in Venice. You will not regret your decison to spend your day seeing Venice with Arved! My pictures are something I will have forever and help me remember the beautiful city that Venice is!
! ! Ich habe viel gesehen und viel gelernt !
I was in Venice last week and had booked a full day walk with Arved as I am always in search of the perfect photographs to capture my trips. I had multiple correspondence with Arved even before I booked a day with him and he was more than willing to create a tour with my interests in mind.
Arved was punctual, well knowledged, and always willing to adjust or itinerary based on where we were and any extenuating circumstances. He never rushed us through a sight and took plenty of time in explaining photography technique when we had questions.
We started a 6:00 am, before sunrise, and finished at about 8:00 pm after dark. We covered many main attractions and also the alleys and canals of venice in order to experience and photograph the venitian daily life. Althought totally exhaused by the end of the day, we had a truly pleasurable experience.
Arved is a professional photographer and I would recommend him to anyone who has a true interest in not only capturing beautiful images of Venice but also looking forward to improving their technique in photography.
All in all … a fantastic day!
Are you looking for an off the beaten path walk of the city to get pictures that show the real Venice, and not just the tourist trap? Then this is the tour for you! My husband and I just took a cruise in Sept. that stopped in Venice. We wanted to see the city as it is and at the same time learn how to use our camera to it’s full ability instead of always relying on auto pilot with a flash. I feel like we got everything we wished for when we signed up for this tour..
Arved met us and we began our walk through the city with photo lessons along the way. We would stop and learn how to take a picture through the looking glass at a little shop, the canals, the architecture, and the general beauty of what is Venice. I learned and understand now the exposure, speed, and the crazy dials I had never used on my camera before. Arved taught me how to take amazing sunset blue hour photos that I will have forever. I have read books that explain that mumbo jumbo, but walking and doing with Arved made it click (no pun intended).
The photos I brought home to show friends and family were nothing short of beautiful. I can hardly believe I took them..
Of all the tours and all the stops on the cruise we did in September, this photo tour with Arved was by far the best and most favorite. Thanks Arved for spending your day teaching what you love to do.
I just can’t say enough wonderful things about this tour! It was an incredible experience!
I booked this tour with very little advance notice while in Venice because I had been booked with another photo tour, but the other photographer canceled at the last minute. So, in swooped Arved to save the day! He really was awesome. Super responsive when scheduling the tour, and it only began there.
We booked an early morning tour for some great blue hour shooting, starting at St. Marks, and then wandering around less touristy areas of Venice. Arved was easy to talk to, and he really taught me a lot about photography. He made me fall I love with my SLR camera all over again. I got great advice about composition as well as the technical details of using my camera settings.
I really can’t say enough about how great Arved and his tour are. You will not be disappointed!
My husband and I just returned home from a 12 day cruise to the Mediterranean. We typically stick with the excursions offered by the cruise line, but decided to do something different in Venice.
I read about Arved’s photo tour here on trip advisor, as well as some of the photography forums, and immediately knew I wanted to take it, and I wasn’t disappointed.
We met Arved early in the morning close to the cruise port and headed over to st mark’s square. From the first photo I knew it was the right decision.
I learned so much during the day, I can’t wait to practice.
Venice is an amazing place. I’m so glad we decided to take the tour!
LOVE LOVE LOVE my photos of Venice. I can’t wait to show them off to my friends and family.
I wish I could say I thought of the concept of getting a tour from a photographer, but I happened upon one, who was booked and recommended Arved. I couldn’t be happier! Myself and two friends spent a day and a half in Venice and wanted a unique way to see things. It rocked. Totally fun. Saw parts of Venice we wouldn’t have seen; got a lovely bit of history and local advice; stopped for gelato (which turned out to be one friend’s favorite from our week and a half in Italy through Rome and Florence); got some photography advice; and just had a blast. Totally recommend this as a great way to get a real flavor for Venice. Enjoy!
A great way to explore Venice and brush up on photography tips! Arved was a great guide as well as teacher and really did get me thinking about new ways to see.If you’re only gonna be in Venice for a day or a few days, time with Arved is a must and a great way to get some amazing shots in an amazing city! Now it’s time for me to practice, practice, practice! Thanks Arved.
So glad we signed up for an afternoon of wandering Venice with Arved. He was very friendly and we could tell he enjoyed sharing his city with us. He made sure we were getting what we wanted out of the tour – even his favorite gelato place, giving us photography pointers, and sharing his knowledge about Venice. He even emailed us an answer to a question we had about a gondola within a day. I would highly recommend going on Arved’s tour and can’t wait to return again one day!
Our family including 2 teens got so much from this tour. It was my 5th visit to Venice and saw areas never been to before. Do it early in your itinerary because you will be using the camera skills all the time after! Advice included best times for shooting, a comprehensive follow up by e-mail of the technical details (nil to start off with) and so much enthusiasm.
Stop for ice cream/coffee any time and see the city with new eyes.
I travelled solo to Venice from 18-21st October with the purpose of focusing on my photography. I booked Arved for a full day photo walk on Fri 19th Oct and was not disappointed! We had a very early start at St Mark’s Square to make use of the morning light. A busy first hour was followed by a welcome breakfast & coffee stop – Italians don’t sit down for coffee – and kept on walking. Over the course of the day Arved purposely took back roads, alleys and avoided main arteries and I was very thankful – I saw a side of Venice I never expected. Stops included the Rialto market, Castello neighbourhood, lots and lots of laundry lines, Accademia Bridge and Rialto Bridge, I think we must have seen the whole island in one day! We took lunch and afternoon snack stops at local bacari (Italian tapas bars) and finished off the day with a spritz (typical aperitif with prosecco)… after another intense hour of shooting sunset and low-light of course!
Throughout the day Arved was attentive and helpful, quickly got a feel for my skill level and tailored his tuition to match. He is very knowledgeable, offering tips and suggestions about framing, composition and light, and how to “do” street photography. He loves his city and was able to tell me all about the history, architecture, the culture of gondolas, and what it’s like to live here. And above all, he’s just a great guy to spend a day with – very personable, friendly and chatty, we laughed all day long as we walked around Venice. Even before I arrived, he was in regular email contact offering suggestions and info about Venice, and made me feel very welcome before I even got there!
I had an absolutely fantastic day and would recommend Arved’s photo walks to ANYONE.
Definitely do the full-day walk, it’s a long day but definitely worth it for the morning & evening times. You’ll see tons on your day.
Make sure you bring comfortable shoes because you will be doing a LOT of walking – but there are plenty of coffee and gelato stops along the way if you need them! Bring lots of memory card space space, you will need it. Tripod essential for dawn/dusk low light shots.
Thanks Arved for a great day out!!

My cousin and I were in Venice late Oct and we ran right smack into aqua alta – the high tide flash floods that occurs regularly during this season. During our 3-hour photo walk on 28th morning with Arved, it was water almost everywhere. It was extremely helpful of Arved to inform us the day before through email about the weather conditions as we reached town, and he advised us to go buy a pair of high rubber boots for the walk, for which we were extremely thankful.
Wading through flood waters in Venice in rubber boots was incredibly fun! Besides pointing out angles to shoot the flooding scenes of the moment, Arved led us through alleyways, revealing quiet corners and pointing out interesting decorative details for us to capture. It was a wholly enjoyable and rewarding experience, though we were just using point and shoot cameras. Photography tips he shared were very much appreciated and got us thinking more about what goes into a picture.
Thanks Arved.

We are from the US and we recently went to Venice. We decided to book a photo tour to get the most out of our 3 day stay…If you go to Venice and you are looking to book a photo tour. You absolutely must book Arved.
He is so very nice – incredibly knowledgeable about Venice and an amazing photographer. He takes his time with you – he offers you pointers (we learned so much) and he takes you places that are off the beaten path so that you can really see and know Venice. And all along the way he shares all of his knowledge about Venice with you.
Arved is one amazing guy – one amazing tour guide and now one amazing friend! Out of 10 stars – we give Arved’s Tour 12 stars!
