If the subjects don’t come to you, you have to create your own or travel to them. Or even better, move to them. Many have visited Venice already, shooting hundreds of frames of this picturesque Italian city. But ever thought about living there? I do.
In a few hours I’m going to head to the airport, hopefully checking into a small hotel located next to a canal in the evening (due to the price most probably to a room with boring back side view). And my interest won’t be shooting at all! Can’t believe?
The only real purpose of travel will be to figure out, if moving to and living in Venice fits our budget. It was one of the major goals (beside the photographic ones) for this year and the path is fraught with obstacles. But it’s time to give it a try, time for change.
Don’t get me wrong, it is not my passion to move to Italy to only shoot even more of the images millions of people already have shot. And I don’t think working there will be easy going. Quite the opposite, shooting in Venice might mean finding a way to show the city with a completely different approach (which is even harder than it sounds).
On the other hand living in such a surrounding would give me the opportunity to also produce valuable travel images when I am at home, the time between other projects. I wanted to leave my current hometown Wiesbaden anyway this year. Why not choose a really beautiful place to live for a while.
Of course, in the next days my camera will always be with me, in case anything crosses my path calling “photograph me, photograph me”. But there is no planning in advance, no research, no brainstorming, not even the must to bring a single valuable file back home. One 5D Mark II body, as lens the Canon allrounder 24-70/2,8, some batteries and memory cards, one photo tank (throwing my fear of data losses to the wind).
Although being badly prepared I am quite sure, one or another subject will find its way in front of my camera. So, very likely there will be some images posted when I am back in a few days.
Until now moving to Venice is just a crazy plan, but one to be consolidated in near future.
